Asbestos Surveying

Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2006) require those in charge of non-domestic premises to manage the risks associated by the presence of asbestos. The duty holder is required to:

-Determine and record the presence and condition of asbestos containing materials (ACM's) within their premises
-Assess the likelihood of exposure to the ACM's
-Regularly inspect the ACM's to ensure no deterioration is occurring
-Prepare a management plan to ensure:
-Relevant parties are aware of the presence of ACM's
-Identified ACM's have a re-inspection programme in place
-Materials that have deteriorated are repaired or removed

The first step is usually to commission an asbestos survey. At HFS Environmental we are UKAS accredited to carry out Type 1, 2 and 3 asbestos surveying as detailed below:

Type 1 Location and assessment asbestos surveying

The purpose of this survey is to locate the presence and extent of any suspected asbestos containing materials in the building and assess their condition. This type of survey defers the need to sample and analyse samples for the presence of asbestos until a later time.

Type 2 Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey (sampling survey)

The procedures used are the sample as for a type 1 survey, however this time representative samples are collected and analysed for the presence of asbestos within our laboratory.

Type 3 Full access sampling and identification asbestos surveying (pre-demolition/major refurbishment surveys)

This type of survey is used to locate and describe, as far as reasonably practicable ALL asbestos containing materials within the building. Destructive techniques will often be required to ensure access is gained to all areas including those that are difficult to reach. Due to the nature of the survey, the area to be surveyed must be unoccupied at the time of the survey.
